SOMERVILLE, NJ – Downtown Somerville is getting a fresh new look this summer thanks to a grant awarded through Main Street America, bringing new seating, vibrant greenery, and improved bicycle amenities to Division Street.

The Downtown Somerville Alliance (DSA) recently installed seven modular cube seating configurations including four decorative planters, and two new bicycle racks on Division Street and Giardina Alley. The improvements are designed to enhance the visitor experience, encourage longer stays downtown, and support the growing number of events and activities taking place throughout the summer season.

The colorful new furniture creates inviting spaces for residents and visitors to relax, gather with friends, enjoy a meal, or take in live entertainment on Division Street. By adding additional seating throughout the corridor, the project helps transform the space into an even more welcoming community destination.

“Division Street has become the heart of downtown activity, and these enhancements make it even more inviting for residents and visitors alike,” said Dana Kessel, Director of the Downtown Somerville Alliance. “Whether you’re enjoying live music, dining outdoors, shopping with friends, or simply taking a break, these new amenities create comfortable spaces that encourage people to stay longer and experience everything Downtown Somerville has to offer.”

The enhancements were made possible through funding from Main Street America, an organization dedicated to strengthening historic downtowns and commercial districts across the country. The grant supports placemaking initiatives that improve public spaces, encourage economic vitality, and create memorable experiences for residents and visitors.

As Downtown Somerville’s summer event season continues with live music, outdoor dining, festivals, movie nights, and community gatherings, the new streetscape elements will provide additional opportunities for people to sit, relax, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that has made Division Street one of New Jersey’s premier downtown destinations.
